Why Play Matters in Child Development


The whole child learns through play

Long before research could explain it, children were already discovering the world through play.

Today, findings from pediatrics, psychology, neuroscience, and education help us understand what adults have long observed. Children learn not only by receiving information, but by moving, touching, testing, communicating, and responding to what happens around them.

Play is not separate from learning. It is one of the places where learning takes shape. While playing, children may hold an idea in mind, try it out, adjust when something changes, communicate with others, and begin again. These experiences bring thought, movement, emotion, language, and relationships into the same process. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics and scholars of playful learning supports this connected view of childhood development. [1] [2]

This does not mean that every kind of play produces the same result for every child. It means that meaningful play creates opportunities for children to take part in their own learning through actions they can see, feel, and understand.

Development grows together

Development is not a collection of isolated skills.

Thinking is connected to movement and perception. Emotional regulation involves attention and self-control. Language develops through interaction with other people. What happens in one area can influence what becomes possible in another.

Developmental milestones offer useful reference points, but real growth happens through a continuing relationship between the body, thought, emotion, experience, and the people around a child.

We can see this in ordinary moments of play. A child builds something, notices that it has shifted, adjusts a piece, and tries again. Within this short sequence, the child is already looking, moving, remembering, deciding, and responding to the result.

Physical and sensorimotor development

Movement, perception, and coordination

Physical and sensorimotor development describes how children use their bodies and senses to understand and respond to the world around them.

When a child grasps a piece, turns it, changes its position, and adjusts it until it rests more effectively, these actions are not separate from thought. Movement provides information. The child sees and feels the result, then uses that information to decide what to do next.

Small actions such as grasping, rotating, placing, and aligning give children opportunities to coordinate what they see with what their hands are doing. Activities involving the whole body bring distance, direction, physical effort, and awareness of the surrounding space into the experience.

Research on embodied cognition offers one way to understand this relationship. It describes thinking as something shaped partly through perception, action, and interaction with the environment, rather than as a process that happens entirely apart from the body. [3]

During hands-on play, movement becomes part of how children explore a question and respond to what they discover.

Cognitive development and executive function

Working memory, self-control, and flexible thinking

Executive function refers to a group of mental processes that help us hold information in mind, focus attention, regulate an immediate response, and adjust when circumstances change.

The Harvard Center on the Developing Child describes three core areas of executive function: working memory, mental flexibility, and self-control. [4]

These processes often come into use naturally during play.

A child may need to remember what they are trying to build, consider what should happen next, pause before placing a piece, or change the plan when the result differs from what they expected.

When a structure collapses, the child can stop, observe what happened, and try another approach. The next attempt may involve changing the position of a piece, adjusting an angle, reducing a gap, or beginning again from a different point.

Trying again is therefore more than repeating the same action. Each attempt can provide new information for the next decision.

Within moments like these, children have opportunities to plan, compare, solve a visible problem, and begin anticipating what may happen before they act.

Social and emotional development

Self-regulation, different perspectives, and participation

Social and emotional development includes how children recognize and manage feelings, participate with others, and begin to understand that another person may see the same situation differently.

Play often contains uncertainty. Something may not work, a turn may take longer than expected, or another child may have a different idea. These moments give children opportunities to experience frustration, wait, reconsider, ask for help, and return to what they were doing.

During shared play, children may explain an idea, listen to someone else, divide responsibilities, negotiate how materials will be used, or revise a plan so that different contributions can fit together.

The value is not limited to completing a shared task. Children also experience what it means to have a role, influence what happens, and contribute to something created with other people.

The American Academy of Pediatrics identifies play as an important context for social-emotional development, self-regulation, communication, relationships, and a growing sense of agency. [1]

Language and communication

Listening, explaining, and telling a story

Language develops through meaningful use, especially when children have something they want to understand, describe, or share.

During play, children may listen to an instruction, explain what they are building, ask for a particular piece, describe what changed, or tell another person what they hope will happen next.

Explaining a process asks children to organize their thoughts. They may describe what came first, what they changed, and what happened as a result.

Storytelling can emerge in another way. A construction becomes a place. An object becomes a character. Several elements begin to suggest an event, a journey, or a relationship.

Play gives words a purpose. Ideas such as balance, height, distance, proportion, sequence, and cause and effect become connected to something children are actively experiencing.

Language is not added to the play afterward. It grows within the need to ask, explain, imagine, negotiate, and share.

Approaches to learning

Curiosity, persistence, attention, and trying again

How children approach a challenge matters alongside what they already know.

Learning does not happen only when something is completed successfully. It can also take place while children explore, compare possibilities, change their minds, and begin again.

When an activity grows from a child’s own curiosity, there is a reason to keep looking, continue testing, or return to a question that has not yet been resolved.

Open-ended play leaves room for more than one direction. Children can try an idea, observe its effect, and decide whether to continue, modify it, or take the play somewhere else.

Persistence in this context does not mean making a child continue. It means having enough time, interest, and emotional safety to return to a challenge when they are ready.

The finished result matters, but so do the moments of looking, choosing, hesitating, adjusting, and trying once more.

As children grow, play changes too

Children do not move through play in exactly the same way or at exactly the same time. Their interests, abilities, experiences, and preferred ways of participating will differ.

Younger children often begin through direct sensory and physical exploration. They grasp, move, repeat, compare, and observe immediate effects.

As children gain experience, their play may become more intentional. They may hold a plan in mind, follow a longer sequence, compare different strategies, or anticipate what a later step will require.

Older children may begin working with more complex systems, structural relationships, extended stories, or forms of collaboration that require negotiation over a longer period.

These are broad tendencies rather than fixed stages. The same child may move between simple exploration and complex planning depending on the activity, previous experience, the setting, and what captures their attention.

A familiar form of play can also grow with the child. What begins as placing and moving may later involve planning, explaining, combining systems, or working toward a shared idea.

What research helps us see

Research does not reduce play to a checklist or suggest that every activity produces an identical developmental result.

What it offers is a clearer view of why active, meaningful, hands-on, and social experiences matter. Play creates situations in which children can move, notice, remember, communicate, make decisions, respond to change, and take part with other people.

Studies of spatial assembly have also found relationships between how young children organize parts in space and their early mathematical skills. These findings do not mean that a particular building toy guarantees mathematical development. They do help show why spatial action and reasoning are meaningful areas of childhood experience. [5]

Research into executive function similarly shows that these mental processes can be supported through repeated practice and appropriately challenging experiences. The important point is not to turn play into an exercise program, but to recognize the thinking already present when children remember, pause, compare, adjust, and try again. [6]

The evidence helps us understand what may be happening within play. It does not replace the child, the context, or the individual path of development.
